I have often said that there’s a million stories in the aisles of National Stationery Show — and for me, uncovering each is like finding a little treasure. That of Harmony Mill Paperie, who exhibited there for the first time earlier this month, is one of finding your true passion after the second act already started.
Stephanie Lendrum earned her Ph.D. in biochemistry, and put it to use as a staff scientist at a lab in a well respected college. But “with a $12 investment and nothing to lose,” she began her first watercolor to burn off steam. Soon she was selling wall art and watercolors in an Etsy shop, and soon after that Stephanie gave her notice to the lab — and hasn’t looked back.
Stephanie’s work is inspired by the world outside her window — and relies on copious research. “I want to be sure that my butterfly is positioned on a plant it would actually encounter, and enjoy, in nature.”
Obviously attention to detail is a hallmark of the range, and Stephanie personally inspects each card and print before it goes out to make sure it’s just right. And everything is locally printed on FSC-certified 100% post-consumer recycled paper.
So, this Labor Day weekend, get out and enjoy! But Harmony Mill Paperie may be the best way to distill the outdoors into a message to be shared with a faraway friend, or hung on a wall to be cherished inside long after summer passes — all while supporting an all-American, woman-owned business.
