My FOMO has been going into high gear all week as I’ve been reading about the new Nordstrom flagship opening up today in NYC — and be warned: by the time you finish reading this, yours might be as well.
The 320,000-square-foot, seven-story shopping space is the largest store to open in Manhattan in more than a half century. And not only is this behemoth venue occupying prime real estate near Columbus Circle with Central Park views, it’s housed at the bottom of the 1,500-foot-tall Central Park Tower, the world’s tallest residential building. Just look for the wave-form glass façade, and you’ve found it!
The women’s store is designed with an eye toward discerning New Yorkers, with the company’s signature amenities a major focus — as well as shoes (a personal addiction that goes into remission but can flare up at any time, like now for example). There will be over 100,000 pairs (!) across multiple floors, many exclusive to the store, plus in-store services like sneaker cleaning, heel replacements and dyeing. There’s an artwork station to customize that new pair of Converses, and over in the red-velvet-draped Nike section, red surveillance cameras take videos of customer shoes, displaying them on video screens. Talk about an Instagram moment!
No detail has been overlooked … including, thankfully, stationery. Also being unveiled today is a shoe-themed stationery collaboration with one of my favorite paper fashionistas, Monica Smiley of eighty seventh ST. (I love her drawing of me so much it’s on all my social media accounts, as well as permanently housed here.) But now her foot-friendly work is on three notebooks, two notepads, two boxed notecard sets and two art prints — and I want it all!
Everything is 100% made in Canada and printed on PCW Certified paper — and you know these will be as posh as that new pair of platforms! Right now these can be only found in the one store everyone is talking about this week — but Monica tells me a phone call to the store at 212.843.511 may well snag a set for any interested party!
